GeoGuessr
GeoGuessr is a great app for teaching geography in the classroom. It gives users a Google Street View of a random street and the player has to guess where the street view is. You can use all of the regular Street View functions to determine your location, you just can't leave street view. Once you have a guess as to where you are, you can put a pin down on a map and it will tell you how far away you were from the actual location. You get points based on how close you are to the actual location.
The game is really easy to use. You just get on GeoGuesser.com and press the get started button. After that it takes you through the 5 rounds and tallies your score up at the end. This game would be a fantastic, interactive way to teach geography to students. They get the opportunity to see different environments and ecosystems. They also are able to see how varied the ecosystems of one single country are. The game can take you from the deserts of Nevada to the lush forests of the Pacific Northwest. By letting students see a visual of the geography they are studying, they can become more connected to the subject, plus it makes the learning process fun.
I would definitely use this in my classroom as a starter activity. Since the game is so interactive, I would use it as a group activity and get the whole class involved. They could decide what direction I should go and the tell me where they think the pin goes on the map. It gets them more involved in learning than just having them take a quiz or label a map.
