DocsTeach
As a Social Studies teacher, it is always important to find a way to incorporate primary sources into the classroom. When students use primary sources in their learning, they are able to get a sense of what that period in time was really like. DocsTeach is a great resource for teachers. It provides a variety of primary documents from different time periods, and with those documents it incorporates student activities. For example the image below is of two different Civil War Recruitment posters, one from the North and one from the South. Beneath the two posters are 4 questions for students to answer that pertain to the creation of the posters, who they are intended for, what the creator of the poster wants the audience to do, and whether or not they are effective.
The app covers every time period from 1754-present. It also covers the topic of civics and government. All of the documents are taken from the National Archives so there are no issues with the trustworthiness of these documents
This is less of an interactive app for students, and more of a resource for myself. That being said, being able to pull documents like these into a History classroom, is a fantastic thing. It gives students a complete picture of the time period by going beyond what the textbook says and instead letting them see real documents and images from that time.
